When Joel, an engineer, faced an unexpected termination after years of dedicated service, he was uncertain about his next steps. With the support of NTUC PME, he was able to navigate the situation and achieve a fair outcome.

Joel joined the company in September 2019 and served diligently for more than six years. On 3 December, he received a termination letter informing him that his last day of employment would be 2 January 2026. Given his length of service and contributions to the company, Joel requested severance compensation. However, his request was declined.

Seeking guidance, Joel turned to NTUC for assistance. NTUC PME stepped in promptly to review the case. A consultant wrote to the company to formally request mediation, creating a platform for both parties to discuss the matter constructively.

Through two rounds of mediation, the Consultant worked with both Joel and the company to explore possible resolutions. The discussions ultimately led to a positive outcome: the company agreed to provide Joel with an ex-gratia payment equivalent to one month of salary.

While the payment was not initially offered, the mediation process provided a platform for both parties to discuss the matter constructively, and Joel was eventually able to secure financial support as he transitioned to his next career opportunity. More importantly, the case demonstrates how NTUC PME supports its members through mediation, ensuring their voices are heard and helping them work towards fair and balanced outcomes.

Reflecting on the experience, Joel shared:

“I was disappointed when my request for severance pay was initially rejected. NTUC PME supported me by facilitating mediation with my employer and ensuring my concerns were properly heard. Through their guidance during the mediation process, we were able to reach a fair outcome, and I am grateful for their support throughout the journey.”

This case highlights how NTUC PME continues to support members by advocating fair employment practices, facilitating mediation, and helping professionals navigate workplace disputes with confidence.
